Sausage, Penne and Peas in Basil Sauce

Here’s a different cream sauce for all of you pasta-lovers!

It’s clear that I have a passion for using pasta.

I know I’d be a true “foodie” if I made my own, but I haven’t cleared my schedule to make that happen yet. I have two small kids, a crazy dog and a very busy husband. Maybe when we’re empty nesters I can squeeze out some of my own dough.

We shall see.

In the mean time I’ll be using boxed pasta or the fresh pasta from my favorite local trattoria. Let me use my creativity for the sauce.

This is a great one!

And look, almost a five-ingredient recipe… almost.

What You Will Need:
½ lb whole wheat penne pasta
1 lb Italian turkey sausage
1 C fresh basil
2 T flour
1 C low sodium organic chicken broth
½ bag of frozen peas
1 T unsalted butter
salt and pepper skillet large pot

1) Prepare pasta according to package directions.
2) Brown sausage. Remove from pan and cut into 1 inch pieces. Add back to skillet and cook completely. Transfer to plate.
3) Melt butter in skillet and whisk in flour. Gradually stir in chicken broth.
4) Tear basil leaves and stir with peas into sauce.
5) After draining pasta, add back to pot.
6) Mix sausage and sauce into pasta.
7) Serve.
